I’ll never forget the first time I saw Bernie Wrightson’s artwork, when I was 9 years old. It was the first time in my life that the drawings in a comic book sent me flipping back to the first page because I had to learn the artist’s name. Once I learned it, I memorized it. And from then on I kept my eyes peeled for anything else I could find by him. I have been collecting and studying his art ever since. Bernie was the first artist to ever make me think, "I want to draw like THIS GUY when I grow up." I am obviously still nowhere close to achieving that goal, but I keep trying.

I love this guy’s artwork and stories. His drawings have a quaint horror style that reminds me of illustrations from turn-of-the-century Penny Dreadfuls. I find the simplicity of his work fun and refreshing in this day and age where every comic artist tries to be hyper-realistic and ultra-detailed. My favorite Richard Sala books are his Peculia comics, which, by the way, were hugely inspirational to my own Wulf and Batsy. Do yourself a favor and check out his site!

If I was a filmmaker, or even just an actor, I would want to be this guy.
